Hawke's Bay Wine

The Hawke's Bay is the second largest wine growing region in New Zealand and produces premium red varieties. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah grape grown here, provide approximately 80% of New Zealand’s total crop. The warm climate and high sunshine hours produce some of the best examples of rich, complex Chardonnays in the new world.

The changing directions of major rivers throughout the Hawkes Bay shaped valleys and terraces cultivating a variety of soil types from clay loam, to limestone to sands and gravels.

The gravelly coastal areas around Bay View and Te Awanga produce exceptional Chardonnay. The inland areas of Esk Valley, Havelock North and Maraekakaho are prodominently terraced absorbing the sun throughout the day and remaining relatively warm at night. These areas a planted with the red varieties such as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
